Abstract

The study analyzes social perception of environmental hazards in Rivadavia Department, San Juan Province (Argentina). Using a self-administered survey and a cluster sampling design, residents’ representations and attitudes regarding both natural and anthropogenic hazards were examined. Results reveal a greater concern about anthropogenic hazards, especially urban insecurity, while recurrent natural threats such as droughts, flash floods, and revenición (slope failure or terrain displacement) are also perceived as significant. A gap is identified between citizens’ trust in emergency institutions and the limited information actually provided by them. The research contributes to understanding the subjective dimension of risk and highlights the need to integrate social perception into local disaster management.
