Analysis of vulnerable settlements in the Pocito department of San Juan province

Abstract

Currently, the study of vulnerability, risk, and threats has acquired increasing importance in various fields of knowledge, including security, public health, the environment, and technology. This study seeks to analyze, identify, and localize the threats and the level of vulnerability experienced by the population of the Pocito Department, specifically in the area between Aberastain Avenue, 15th Street, 16th Street, and 17th Street. This work will focus on vulnerability to seismic hazards, liquefaction hazards, and landslides in the study area. Following Cardona, who asserts that risk has not been conceptualized comprehensively, but rather in a fragmented manner according to the approach of each discipline involved. To estimate risk according to its definition, it is necessary to consider it from a multidisciplinary perspective (Cardona, 2001, p. 14). Starting from a holistic perspective of the study area, we used a multicriteria methodology (physical and anthropogenic hazards/threats) and Geographic Information Systems. The linking of the two allows for the development of a comprehensive risk map of the specific area.
