Resilience in Risk Geography: Theoretical Debates and Methodological Challenges

Abstract

Resilience has become one of the central concepts in contemporary studies on environmental risk and disaster management. However, its theoretical and political expansion has generated multiple interpretations, epistemological tensions, and methodological difficulties related to its definition and measurement. This essay analyses the conceptual evolution of resilience from the perspective of risk geography, examining the main approaches developed within ecology, psychology, economics, and social sciences. It also discusses the contributions of Latin American authors and recent critiques of the concept, particularly those associated with the depoliticisation of risk and the naturalisation of territorial inequalities. The paper argues that vulnerability and resilience should not be understood as opposing categories, but rather as interdependent dimensions of the same territorial and social process. Methodologically, the study is based on a theoretical and conceptual review of specialised literature, integrating Anglo-Saxon and Latin American perspectives on territorial resilience and risk management.
